Frankfurt Book Fair 2009

In order to tie in with the Frankfurt Book Fair 2009 in which China acts as a Guest of Honor, to establish China’s image with a positive、objective、comprehensive manner, to reflect the achievements of China since reforming and opening-up 30 years ago, and to increase the oversea influence of CASS and the scholars, professor Wang Tongsan and professor Cai Fang (the former is the academician of Chinese Academy of Social Science, the head of the Quantitative Economic and Technological Economic Research Institute, the chief editor of “Economic Blue Book”, the latter is the head of the Population and Labor Economy Institute, the chief editor of “Green Book of Population and Labor”) have given English academic lectures with the title of “the Chinese Economic Development under the Background of Global Financial Crisis & the Contemporary Human Resources and Employment in China” at this Book Fair in Europe. As the organizer and leader of the whole activity, Mr. Xie Shouguang, president of SSAP, organized a team of six member to attend the event in Europe during the period of October 15 to 21, 2009. Besides Mr. Xie his own, the team members are Xu Chunshan (president assistant), Qiu Yang (the director of International Publishing Center), Mao Shuo (the project officer in Bureau of International Cooperation of European affair, CASS), Prefessor Wang Tongsan and Professor Cai Fang.
All the team members attended the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 15th. An agreement to the cooperation of the English version series of “30 years of China’s reforming and opening-up” between the two presses was signed by Mr. Xie, president of SSAP and Mr. Herman Pabbruwe, CEO of Brill, at the beginning of the Frankfurt Book Fair. Afterwards, the English academic speeches themed by “Chinese Economic Development and the Global Financial Crisis” were made by Professor Wang Tongsan and Professor Cai Fang. After the speeches, Professor Markus Taube from University of Duisburg, who was invited by Adenauer, made a simple comment on current economic situation of Germany. The leaders of GAPP (General Administration of Press and Publication) and Bureau of International Cooperation of CASS listened to the speeches at the scene, and gave highly appraisal to this academic speech.
In the morning of October 19th, a group with 5 members, including president Xie, Professor Cai Fang, Xu Chunshan, Qiu Yang and Mao Shuo, visited the headquarters of Brill which is located in Leiden, Netherlands. During the visit, Mr. Herman Pabbruwe gave an introduction to the history and current situation of Brill, and highly rated the cooperation between the two presses. President Xie gave an enthusiastic response to Mr. Herman Pabbruwe, expressed affirmation relating to the co-publishing project, and raised some proposal for the future cooperation. Both sides expressed their fully confidence towards the prospects of cooperation.
Just ended the visit to Brill, accompanied with the colleague of Brill and of East Asian Studies Center, the 5 team members of SSAP went to the Erasmus University Rotterdam for a working visit. After the arrival of Erasmus University Rotterdam, Professor Cai Fang has given an in-depth academic lecture which is titled “Population Advantage: the Driving Force of China’s Future Economic Growth”. The lecture has gained strong response with many audience raising questions.
As an organizer, SSAP was art and part in the Academic Exchange to Europe by full-range for the first time. On the one hand, the complete success of the activity means we have accumulated experienced and expanded the right to speak during the cooperation process. On the other hand, it also suggests that we should be good at seizing opportunity and should call all possible forces into our own use. The valuable experience accumulated in this trip is of important directive significance to our work in the future.
