The book reviews the experience of different groups of people in rural China during land system reform, in particular their attitudes, choices and actions, an what the reform movement brought them. In addition, the volume also contains an informed discussion of the clan system, whose survival depends on the Public Land system. The book adds to the existing body of studies of Land Reform and strengthens the case that the movement was a contributing factor behind the disintegration of the feudal society.
Another important topic of the book is the impact land institutional change had on China’s rural society, including on social structure, productivity, political power, means of production, farmers’ daily life, social customs, material living standard, and mentality.
