The book is the author’s effort towards an analysis of some of the most momentous problems facing China today by following the classic tradition in sociology. In trying to answer the question of what it would take for China to rise up again and to succeed despite having gotten off to a late start, the author examines the current state of and future outlook for China’s development from the social ontological point of view. The analysis makes use of such conceptual dualities in development sociology as growth vs. development, transformation vs. transition, traditional vs. modern, differentiation vs. integration, conflict vs. control, localization vs. globalization, and an analytical framework that highlights social needs, social actions and social structure. Such an analysis can shed light on how society type, social structure, social institutions, social needs and actions are related to social development.
