In this book, the author is chiefly driven to answer one central question: what is the state of income inequality in China? To that end, the author not only compares different estimates for China’ Gini coefficient but also takes on an international perspective, looking at the numbers from a number of other countries. On the issue of public policy, the book is an attempt to correct the lack of sound evaluation of their impact on inequality from which existing literature suffers. The analysis also addresses the issue of how policies can have differential effects on different groups.
