In recent decades, the grip of traditional values on China’s rural population has weakened considerably, while acceptance of more modern values has become increasingly mainstream. The book is an attempt to grapple with the consequences of these changes in Rural China, especially among the younger generation. The author presents results from his fieldwork in Huangcun, a village located on the Loess Plateau, in the country’s northwest hinterland. As more and more young people choose to sever their ties with farming, rurality and pastorality, the need to understand why is also urgent. The book tackles the issues by trying to answer two questions: how to explain the genesis and development of such rejection of all things agriculture-related among students in Huangcun, and what the main characteristics of such rejection are and what implications this attitude has for the lives of these students.
