With the publication of this book the author hopes to contribute toward the development of “Global and Transnational Sociology”, an emerging subfield in sociology. As the world becomes ever more interconnected, each modern country finds its own national functions and character increasingly subject to the influence of transnational forces (including those of international organizations, international trade and foreign investments). This has in turn led to changes in the relationships between the state and the market, and between the state and society. The book takes a close look at the relationship between globalization and modern countries by drawing on a rich body of empirical data. It tries to show readers how global nation-states are formed and how globalization shapes countries.
