Many if not most commonly held views about parenting among Chinese today are based on research done in Western countries. Yet the prevailing theories have had scant empirical support from local data. To fill this gap, the author conducted three social surveys between 2013 and 2016 within one conurbation. Analysis of the survey results and the interviews allows the author to identify in a systematic way the dominant parenting styles in China today and to assess their impact on children and adolescents. Specific topics, include mental health, basic values and worldview, academic performances, extracurricular and other daily activities, acculturation, parent-child relations, deviant behavior, bullying, victimization, among others.
