This book is an oral history and ethnography of a rural girl's family tree of education passed down through the centuries in rural China after she became a mother. It explores in depth the topics of kinship and co-parenting, grace and virtue, the ethics of suffering, adolescent stirrings, the help of noble people, class transition, modern parenting anxiety, perfect motherhood and symbolic patriarchy in family education. Here, we can see both the complex experiences of five generations of a rural family who brought up their children in the face of hardship, turmoil and uncertainty over the course of more than a hundred years, and the ways in which the 'wild children', whose personal destinies were tied to those of the nation, grew up. The many paths to adulthood.
