Studies in Social History is an academic journal sponsored by the Centre for the Study of Chinese Social History at Shanxi University. This is the fourteenth series, divided into four sections: "Special Essays" on the life of Liu Dapeng, the issue of the "subjugated people" in the Ming Dynasty, forestry and resource conservation in modern China, the construction of the burial system in Shanghai's Siming Gongsi, and the development of nurses and medical care in modern China. The "Academic Review" discusses regional social order and the historiography of local histories, and explores the connotations and values of the study of Chinese clan genealogy theories; the "Book Review" reviews the works of Shen Ai-di's 1857-1942) by Shen Ai-ti, and The Minions: Clerks and Servants in the County Courts of the Qing Dynasty by Bai Rui-de; and 'Notes on Reading History', which reviews four rare local histories of Shanxi in the Qing Dynasty.
