Seychelles is a small island state in the Indian Ocean with an important maritime geostrategic location. Seychelles was occupied by French colonisers in 1756, and after 1794 the British and the French contested and alternated the occupation of Seychelles several times before it became a British colony in 1814 and declared its independence in 1976. Seychelles is a multi-ethnic country with a population of only 100,000. The mainstay of its economy is tourism and marine fisheries, making it one of the few high-income countries in Africa. Seychelles pursues a foreign policy of neutrality, non-alignment, good neighbourliness and pragmatism.
