The book is divided into four parts, each dealing with four sub-themes: urban-rural perceptions, urban-rural interaction, urban-rural exchanges and urban-rural experiences, touching on various aspects of the development and transformation of urban-rural relations in China throughout the 20th century. The section on "Urban-Rural Separation and Changing Concepts" discusses the various explorations that took place in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, that is, in the first half of the 20th century, when cities were separated from the countryside and independent municipalities were first established. The section on 'Population Migration and Urban-Rural Exchanges' focuses on population movements and changes in urban-rural relations in the first 30 years of the People's Republic of China; the section on 'Life Experiences and Urban-Rural Experiences' focuses on the new changes in rural life after the reform and opening up.
