Description:

Opera is a literary art form bred out of Chinese culture. It is the sole and most important cultural manifestation of traditional Chinese culture in the field of drama. It is no less culturally representative than Chinese characters, Confucianism and the four great inventions. It is perhaps for this reason that since the twentieth century, the study of opera has been the pre-eminent study in the field of Chinese literature. There have been many great masters and many books. Throughout the century of opera studies, research on the origins of opera, writers' works and vocal music has become the mainstream, while interdisciplinary research on opera has only been conducted for 30 or 40 years. The present study is an attempt at an interdisciplinary study of opera. As many opera researchers have realised, opera is very closely related to folk life and folk culture. Many scholars have made useful attempts in this area before. Compared to the mainstream of opera studies, interdisciplinary studies are still an area to be explored in opera studies. Although some scholars have previously conducted interdisciplinary studies on Yuan dynasty opera as an example, producing a number of important results. However, it must be noted that the Yuan dynasty was only one hundred years in the development of opera, and after the Yuan dynasty, opera underwent another six centuries of rapid progress, so it is clear that the entire history of opera development cannot be covered if only the Yuan dynasty is studied. This study is an attempt to cover the entire history of opera development from a theoretical perspective based on previous studies, and to examine the relationship between opera and the folk culture of opera from a perspective not much studied by previous authors. As mentioned in the opening chapter, the study of the art of opera is the study of the flower, and the study of the relationship between opera and folklore is the study of the soil in which the flower grows. The reason why Chinese opera has developed in a completely different way from Western theatre after a thousand years is to be found in the soil that nurtures the roots of the flower. The study of the root soil is the most essential study of all.
