The southward movement of cadres from northern China in 1949 was a major decision made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to liberate the whole of China and complete the takeover and construction of the south, and is an important part of the history of the foundation of New China. This book presents a systematic account of the organisation of the southward movement of cadres in Shandong through in-depth excavation of archival materials from archives around the country and the use of fieldwork and oral interviews, and completes the presentation of the selection criteria, transfer principles, selection methods and steps for the southward movement of cadres. The book also provides an authentic social history of the complex thoughts and actions of the cadres when they were transferred southwards, the trials of their daily work, the changes in the social mentality of the old areas of Shandong, the problems of marriage, family and population in the old areas of Shandong, and the strenuous efforts of the military and people of Shandong to solve these problems. This book combines social and revolutionary history, giving a richer life to revolutionary history and injecting a richer connotation to the spirit of southward and southward movement on the basis of truth-seeking.
