In 1911, American geologist Rollin T. Chamberlin published in National Geographic a photo of a theatre stage meeting a camera in the town of Dujiangyan, allowing the West and the East to look at each other through the lens in history. Taking this as a starting point, this book retraces National Geographic's coverage of China over the past one hundred years, focusing on human stories and geographical landscapes at different stages of history, and giving multiple perspectives to the silent words and images that have spanned over one hundred years. The book focuses on the "Southwest corner", combing four themes related to the image of Southwest China, including botanical geography, road traffic, ecological civilisation and ethnic culture, etc. The book applies the research methods of cross-cultural and literary anthropology, reflecting on the multiple veils of cultural writing, and analysing the process of regional civilisation change from different disciplinary perspectives.
