Since 2016, the Sino-Africa Summit forum has become an increasingly influential international event, as China’s involvement in development across African continues to grow. However, it is still common for researchers anywhere to adopt a west-centric perspective when studying China-Africa relations, and misunderstandings abound in media reportage on this topic, not all of which as innocent or innocuous as they might seem. Based on data they have collected over the past decade through interviews, questionnaires, and from other sources, the authors criticize and try to correct what they see as persistence biases and distortions in mainstream media portrayal in the West of China’s activities on the African continent.
