The Mekong River is an important international river flowing through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, with a total length of 4880 kilometers. It originates in Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and is known as the Lancang River in China.Since its establishment in 1992, Greater Mekong Sub-region(GMS) cooperation has yielded great accomplishment in many fields during the past two decades with support from GMS countries and the participation of international community and relevant international organizations. With the extension in scope and depth, GMS cooperation plays a growing role in driving member countries’ economic and social development, enhancing sub-regional competitiveness and promoting Asian regional economic integration process. It has become a successful model for Asian regional economic cooperation mechanism and South-South cooperation.
In the historical period of GMS cooperation’s third decade (2012-2022), politics, economies and international relations in the sub-region are undergoing a series of profound changes. China’s participation in GMS cooperation is also faced with new opportunities and challenges. Therefore, GMS Study Center of Yunnan University continues to make in-depth researches on GMS cooperation in 2012-2013 following the two GMS annual reports in 2011 and 2012. Based on comprehensive studies, Report on the Cooperation and Development in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (2012-2013) analyzes the hot issues and difficulties in GMS cooperation, as well as explores the development trend.
