Eucommia-rubber, also called “Gutta-percha” or “Palata”, has some unique characteristic of rubber-plastic duality that can be processed and manufactured for a wide range of applications in chemical lines, aerospace sectors, national defense materials, transportations, communications, electric power, water conservancy, sports, and medical treatment, etc. On the other hand, EU itself is one of the most valuable herbs used for thousands of years by the Chinese people. Chinese claim that EU can “revitalize the internal organs, increase prowess, strengthen the bones, muscles, and tendons... and delay aging when taken regularly”. It is now widely planted in 27 provinces (districts and cities) from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China to Jilin Province in the north, from Shanghai in the east to Kashgar of Xinjiang in the west. It is hardy and drought-resistant, and well- adapted to poor soil conditions. The whole area suitable for growing EU is estimated to be more than 10 million ha in China. However, the total cultivated area of EU at present is only 0.35 million ha. Therefore, there is large potential to expand EU cultivation in China.
