The year 2013 was critical in the development of Chinese charitable organizations. It saw continual growth in the amount of donation, the number and size of philanthropic organizations and volunteerism. Philanthropy has been put on the government’s legislative agenda; efforts to increase the representation of non-governmental philanthropic organizations, to strengthen the system of accountability and to enhance the professionalization in and of the industry have met with preliminary success; the traditional notion of planned philanthropy has been abandoned; and public participation is quickly becoming the new norm.
