Description:
This book is a survey of some of the recent systematic studies of social values. It explores in detail the key features of over ten theories, including materialism, collectivism, fairness and justice, and contractarianism. Contributors to the volume point out the importance of reconstructing a set of shared social values. The report also indicates that such reconstruction must be based on a private morality that esteems the simple and unadorned life , and that any effort to shape a new system of shared social values ought to be based on the respect for each individual’s personal choice of moral beliefs. This will not only improve social cohesion, but also promote social development.
