Description:

The Report on Chinese Social Opinion and Crisis Management(2015) was completed relying on the advantage in online public opinion research of the Public Opinion Research Laboratory of Shanghai Jiaotong University, by conducting big data mining and statistical analysis. Based on theories of multiple disciplines, the report studied 6000 hot public events from 2010 to 2014 systematically. The research is structured in one general public opinion report and reports on different topics including enterprise and finance, education, environment, public health, anti-corruption, judiciary and law, and Chinese public opinion on international social media platforms. The report provides in-depth discussion on the basic characteristics, diffusion rules, netizen attitudes, government intervention in the public events, analyzed the influence of public events on public policy, explored relevant most-discussed topics, and predicted the future trends of public opinion.

Results of the report show that in the year of 2014, positive public events has increased while negative public events has decreased, but the relative pressure of public opinion is slightly higher than that in 2013. The east region of China suffers from the largest number of negative public events and highest overall pressure, while the west region has the highest pressure of negative public opinion. The attention on public events is relatively high in 2014, and is only lower than that in 2012 in the recent five years. The positive public events have increased and negative public events have decreased. Public events on public management and social organizations show no decline over the five years; public events in education, manufacture, culture and sports, and entertainment draw the most public attention; public events occurred in the east region decreases, but still account for the highest proportion; new media is still the main type of first-exposure media, and most public events were first exposed by network news; the time lag between event occurrence and exposure has been slightly shortened; most events last less than one week; there is a decrease for online rumors. The burgeoning of mobile Internet brings series of changes in communication ecology. New policies on Internet development had been introduced frequently in 2014, and network society governance was emphasized. 2014 could be called the year of Internet safety, media fusion, and e-diplomacy.

The report also expands the research width and enriches the research depth in public opinion by conducting monographic studies. On the one hand, it merges the “public events database” constructed by the Public Opinion Research Laboratory with the external database, and relates the number and distribution of regional public events to the index of regional economy, education, Internet development from 2010 to 2014. On the other hand, the report also deepens the monographic studies on public policies, and media credibility by conducting a series of empirical studies. Specifically, it covers the impact of the diffusion of online public opinion on public-policy making; and comparisons on media credibility among Chinese residents. Finally, the properties and sources of the online hot words in 2014 were analyzed, and the Annual Report on Online Hot Words in 2014 was published.

The Report on Chinese Social Opinion and Crisis Management(2015) was edited by the Public Opinion Research Laboratory, Social Survey Center, and Crisis Management Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
