Description:

The European Migration Development Report (2020) is a collective research result of the European Migration Crisis Management Research Team of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and International Migration Research Center (jointly established by Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Guangdong Institute of Ethnic and Religious Studies),based on continuing research attention to the refugee crisis and migration development in Europe. In addition to researchers from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and other universities in China, this book invites experts from European universities to participate in the writing, with multidisciplinary perspectives from politics, economics, sociology and Western languages and culture.

Most of the modern EU countries are net-immigration countries, and the immigrant population constitutes an important part of the population of each country. Besides migrants from EU member states, migrants from third countries (non-EU member states) account for a certain proportion of the population in all EU countries. Among them,Germany is the country with the largest number of EU immigrants and non-EU immigrants, while Britain,France,Italy,Spain and other countries also have the “double high” number of EU immigrants and non-EU immigrants. The sources of non-EU immigrants are diverse and their distribution is uneven. Among them,Turks are the largest immigrant group in EU countries, while Germany is the main destination country for Turks. Moroccans are the second largest immigrant group, living mainly in Spain,Italy,Belgium and the Netherlands. Indians,Syrians,Chinese and Russians are also the main immigrant groups in EU. The main categories of non-EU migrants entering EU are family reunification, education, employment, and refugees, accounting for roughly one quarter each. In 2019,the peak period for refugees entering EU countries has passed, and the total volume has declined, but the stock has continued to grow.

The theme of this year’s European Migration Development report is immigration groups and integration. It includes one general report, eight country reports, four specialist reports and a chronicle of Migration in Europe. The general report focuses on the analysis of the development trend of European immigrants in 2019 and the pattern and effect of immigration integration policies of EU countries. According to the research, due to the political, economic, social and cultural influences of various countries and the composition of immigrant groups, the degree of immigrant integration is not high in all countries. In terms of unemployment and poverty rates, immigrant groups, especially non-EU immigrants, are at a relative disadvantage across countries. The difficulty of immigrant integration is reflected in the “politicization” of immigration issues in the political field, which makes it difficult for mainstream European communities and immigrant communities to form a common European identity. In the social field, immigrants and their descendants are differentiated from the mainstream society in terms of values, behavior and lifestyle, etc.,and the integration mode of various countries fails to achieve social harmony. In the cultural sphere, there is often a partial understanding and a lack of mutual respect between mainstream European and immigrant culture. Taking the Roma in France and the Chinese in Europe as examples, the special report introduces the impact of immigration management and immigration composition in each country on immigrant integration.
