Museums have been an essential part of China’s socialist cultural undertakings. Under the great effort and impetus of the Party and state,China’s museums have achieved unprecedented development in recent years. Towards the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan,it seems reasonable to sort out its history and development, review its achievements, and underline the potential problems it may have been encountered at this point.
The current book contains six main chapters, including:General report;Topical report;Case studies;International expertise;Milestone;Appendix. Chapter I is established on the basis of statistic data of recent years. Focusing on the overall development of China’s museums,it combines a wealth of international experience and museum expertise, points out its potential problems and provides suggestions accordingly. Chapter II has six topical papers, covering areas of exhibition, education, cultural industry, and of two special types of museums (e.g. non-state museums, and museums of intangible cultural heritage). Chapter III pays attention to the innovative and characteristic development of museums in China. The wide range of case studies offers a rich store of practical and first-hand experience in the areas of education, intellectualized programming, mobilized and standardized construction and so on. Chapter IV discusses recent ideas and experiences from American and European museum management and operations, and the impact they may cast on China. Chapter V reviews important events at the national level and the provincial level, and attempts to form an overall impression of the development of China’s museums in the past five years. Chapter VI sorts out, reviews and analyzes the relevant policies and regulations of Chinese museums.
