Description:

The release of this first issue of the China NPO Review signals a harvest time in the study of China’s not-for-profit organizations.

Observing and researching China’s NPOs and related social phenomena in this period of transformation is the mission, sent down by history, for our generation of China NPO researchers. Many among us joined this field, this pioneers paradise because of an epochal opportunity and have been tilling this tough soil for some years. There has been fruit. And to better labor together as partners, we have created this village common. We invite the support of our colleagues and hope this garden sends down sturdy roots and enjoys the fields recognition and participation, society’s recognition and support, and international recognition and exchanges.

Today, more and more scholars watching China’s social transformation are focusing on the large number of NPOs in China. The very existence of NPOs signifies that Chinese society, in its transformation, is broadening and deepening. Through NPOs, Chinese society, at its most fundamental, grassroots level, is developing new social capital, introducing and encouraging citizen participation. At the same time, this prompts the Party and the government to more actively promote communication between the State and society, and also pushes forward improvements in China’s legal and policy systems. Though through our own eyes, we cannot yet identify the kinds of conclusions at which de Tocqueville or Putnam arrived, we believe that as the construction of China’s Harmonious Society continues, on some day in the future, we will see the strikingly positive correlation between the social capital formed by China’s NPOs, the Chinese people’s spirit, and the Harmonious Society’s systemic effectiveness. That day will mark a rich achievement and a milestone in the history of China’s NPO studies.
