This is a study of the demographic factors, including age structure and migration trends, behind the imbalance between China’s domestic economy and international trade. The book looks specifically at the impact of age structure and migration on savings rate and trade surplus. The author argues that the imbalance is chiefly attributable to weak domestic consumer spending, which in turn reflects the impact of age structure and migration trends. Policies that may help address these issues include, according to the author, postponing the retirement age, optimizing income distribution, and increasing the wages of migrant workers.
