This book deals with important current issues related to China’s energy security, in particular new challenges, including those given rise to by trade friction, overseas energy investment, energy finance development, strategic reserve, and the country’s commitment to developing a low-carbon economy.
After a clarification of the concept of energy security and an account of its evolution, the authors looks at new problems of energy security under the conditions of low carbon development. On the basis of an international comparison of the level of energy security in different countries, implications are drawn out about how to improve energy security in China. This is followed by an analysis of new developments in financialization in China’s energy market, and the challenges they bring. Policy suggestions are given on how to meet these challenges. The book also contains discussion of the impact of energy price fluctuation on the economy in general and on the energy financial market in particular, how energy price fluctuation should be kept to a minimum for purpose of risk-prevention from the perspective of financial risk management. Finally, the author turns to the international environment of China’s energy trade and investment, illustrated with a case study in China’s outbound investment in the energy sector.
